1. Get a plan!
Don’t let your delay stop you; the best time to start is today. Start by figuring out what kept you in place (avoiding school, following a girlfriend/boyfriend, peer pressure, or plain old laziness). Once you figure this out, practice avoiding those things. You can’t move forward with bad habits pulling you back.
2. Get some skills!
That doesn’t have to mean going to a 4-year college, but get educated in something that the job market is demanding. There are many profitable roles out there; some require formal education, some can be attained through on-the-job training, and some can be self-taught (the internet is your friend?).
3. SAVE YOUR FUNDS! As much as you can. This is key!
- One benefit in staying with parents is the potential to stack your money.
- If you don’t have a job, get one. ASAP! Money makes the world go around, and even saving $10/week is progress.
- Be open-minded to the possibility of working multiple jobs, or having multiple streams of income.
- Time is money; if you reallocate time spent on activities that don’t bring in funds (napping, hanging out with friends, watching tv, scrolling through social media, etc.), and put that time towards profitable activities, you could increase your savings quicker.
- And don’t neglect small increases; they compound before you know it. For instance, working on the weekend or after work for 10-20 hours per week even at minimum wage could pay your monthly car note or even rent!
4. Know that there is a home for every budget ?.
Maybe you should consider a roommate situation. If you were late to launch, staying under your family’s roof won’t propel you. There is a correlation between making your own way and independently sustaining in the long-term. Don’t be scared of it; you can do it.
5. KEEP YOUR MENTALITY STRONG! Mindset is the #1 determinant of success.
You must first see yourself as successful, even if you don’t yet have all the answers. Keep pushing; it will all work out!
